US President Joe Biden has defended his decision to withdraw military forces from Afghanistan, saying that US operations will end on 31 August.
The fourth US president to oversee the war also defended the speed of the US withdrawal, saying it saved lives.
Mr Biden's speech comes as the Taliban militant group continues to seize territory around the country.
US forces have fought in Afghanistan for nearly 20 years, following the terror attacks of 11 September 2001.

Police in Haiti have killed or arrested the gunmen suspected of murdering President Jovenel Moïse, but say they are still hunting the masterminds.
At least four gunmen have been killed and six more detained including, reportedly, a US citizen.
People were urged to stay calm after they burned cars and seized two "foreigners" who they handed to police.
The interim PM has told the BBC that Mr Moïse may have been killed because he was fighting "oligarchs" in Haiti.

Uefa has charged England after a laser pointer was directed at Denmark keeper Kasper Schmeichel during Wednesday's Euro 2020 semi-final at Wembley.
Television pictures showed a green light on Schmeichel's face just before Harry Kane took an extra-time penalty.
Schmeichel saved the spot-kick but Kane scored the rebound as England won 2-1 to reach Sunday's final against Italy.
England are also charged with causing a "disturbance" during Denmark's national anthem and setting off fireworks.

Fully vaccinated UK residents arriving in England from amber travel list destinations will no longer have to quarantine from 19 July.
However, they will still need to pay for Covid tests before and after their return, the transport secretary said.
Grant Shapps told MPs that under-18s returning from amber list places would also be exempt from quarantine.
Travel industry leaders said the change was a "positive step" but called for the amber list to be expanded.

A Spanish minister has been roasted by members of his own coalition government over his efforts to reduce meat consumption in the country.
This week consumer affairs minister, Alberto Garzón, launched a campaign to encourage Spaniards to eat less meat.
"Eating too much meat is bad for our health and for the planet," Mr Garzón said in a video on Twitter.
But for some cabinet ministers, his plea for moderation was difficult to swallow.
